This is where you can dig into more of the detail. Our FAQs cover the basics of a Barry’s class as well as tackling buying classes. If you still can’t see what you need, contact your local studio.
What is Barry's?
According to our clients, Barry’s is the Best Workout in the World™®. Founded in West Hollywood in 1998, it’s the original strength and cardio interval fitness experience that provides an immersive, high-intensity, workout that’s as effective as it is fun.
Our 55-minute fitness classes alternate between working out with weights and running on a treadmill. Each day focuses on a different muscle group in order to achieve real results and to prevent injuries. Our program is designed to tone muscle and maximize fat loss, while spiking the metabolism for up to 48 hours following the class.
All classes take place in a high-energy and encouraging environment. The dimly lit red room, curated music, and inspiring instructors will motivate you to run, lift, and work harder than ever before.

Is the class like a military bootcamp?
Nope! Barry’s is anything but military in style. Our trainers will motivate you in a way that will have you coming back for more! While you may get hot and sweaty working to get hard in our red room, we won’t be making you crawl through any mud or sand. We’ll also let you stay afterwards to have a shower and a smoothie, and shop for your next workout outfit.
Will I be okay if I'm a beginner or not already in shape?
Don’t worry! We welcome beginners and have a lot of them. While we don’t have a beginner’s class, we look after all of our first-timers in every class.
To make the most of your first class, we recommend arriving 15 minutes early so we can explain the workout and introduce you to your instructor.
Barry’s classes are created for individuals to challenge themselves on the treadmill and with weights — you can set your own level of speed and choose the heaviness of your weights, depending on your experience. Barry’s clients love it when they start to beat their own personal bests. For ultra beginners, you can choose to walk vs. run on the treadmill, or opt for the lightest weights.

Do I have to be a good runner?
No. That’s the great thing about running as a cardio exercise. Everyone can do it, but most people just need to warm up to the idea. It’s not always easy — you need to have a bit of faith in yourself and take it slowly while you get used to it. Go at your own pace and see how it goes. Our runs are done in intervals and you can do anything for a few minutes at a time! If you really don’t want to run at all, you have the option to book a Double Floor class.
Do you have a beginner's class?
We don’t have a regularly scheduled beginners class, but first-timers get looked after in every class. Just make sure you arrive 15 minutes early for your first class, and we’ll make sure to give you extra attention.
How often should I go?
We recommend five classes per week as an optimal number, with three classes per week at a minimum, if you’re committed to seeing a real change in your body and your energy levels.
Many Barry’s clients take more than five classes a week, but we always recommend incorporating some rest, especially if you’re just starting out. Listen to your body — if your muscles are very sore, give them time to repair.
How long will it take to see results?
Barry’s clients see results fast. If you are going 3-5 times a week, you should start to see & feel a change in your body in 2 weeks. Your loved ones will probably see a difference in 5 weeks, and your friends (the observant ones, and the ones who have a crush on you) will probably notice in 2-3 months.
But you will notice a psychological change almost immediately. You’ll feel better about yourself, you’ll be more motivated to work out, and seeing the heads whipping around as you stroll by doesn’t exactly hurt your ego.
Can I really burn 1000 calories?
Independent observers (like LIVESTRONG.com) have verified that a Barry’s workout can burn 1,000 calories in an hour. Your mileage may vary, but we’ve seen clients burn from 700 to 1,300 calories, depending on their body weight and effort level. Everyone is different and results may vary, but at Barry’s it’s not just about what you burn in class, but also how our methodology promotes calorie burn after class.
Will weight training really help me lose weight and get fit?
Yes. All day long.
At Barry’s we combine weight training and cardio to keep the heart-rate elevated with intense bursts throughout the workout. When it comes to weights, we believe in continuous high-repetition lifting with medium to heavy weights, depending on the exercise.
This means you’ll burn more calories and increase your lean body mass, which in turn will raise your resting metabolism by up to 15 percent; so, you’re burning calories even after you leave. Translation: you’ll lose fat and keep it off. It’s what we call the “after burn.”
When you build a foundation of firm muscle, the metabolic boost melts away the fat on top and since muscle takes up less space than fat, you’re left with a leaner, slimmer, firmer, and sexier physique.
Is Barry's fun?
We think “fun” is an understatement.
Barry’s classes are run by instructors who make every session as upbeat, energetic, and enjoyable as is humanly possible — while still making sure you work hard.
All of our Instructors are trained to be not only the best in fitness, but to also bring that unique personality and energy that is signature Barry’s. Many of our instructors have some sort of background in entertainment — we’ve got fitness experts who range from ex-rock stars to leading Broadway men and women. We’ve got ballerinas, TV stars, and even a champion male cheerleader. All of our instructors share one thing in common, though — they’re totally equipped to make your class a blast!
Why do days of the week focus on different muscle groups?
Most days, the floor exercise part of your workout is focused on a specific part of the body. There are two reasons for this:
It’s the safest option for people who really want to get fit — switching muscle groups creates the biggest impact and reduces the risk of injury.
The second reason? People come in different shapes and sizes, and all of us have something about our appearance we’d like to prioritize.
Don’t forget that in all Barry’s classes you spend half the time on the treadmill (unless you choose to do Double Floor), so you will always get an overall cardio workout.
Do you offer a special rate for first timers?
We do not offer special rates for first timers.* Occasionally, we will hold special promotions and we invite you to join our email list to ensure you don’t miss out. In the meantime, we would love for you to come by and tour the studio anytime and experience Barry’s firsthand.

How do I pay online?
Register for an account if new, or login and add your credit card. We’ll save it for future purchases. You can also use it for Fuel Bar and retail shop purchases.
How can I see how many classes I have left on my package?
Sign into your account — you’ll see all of your account info there.
What options do I have for buying classes?
You have two options — buy packs of classes or sign up for a membership, depending on the kind of relationship you’re ready to have with us. As you’d expect, the more you commit, the more you save.
Packages are best if you want to keep it casual… maybe you’re still experimenting, or your life’s just a bit complicated. Use your classes whenever it suits you. If you want to reach your goals faster, it’s best to commit. Decide how many times you’ll come per week and sign up for a membership that matches up with your goals.
I'm having problems with my account.
First of all, try the basics:
- If you’ve forgotten your password, follow the link on the login page to set up a new one.
- Make sure your credit card is still valid.
- Update your web browser if you need to.
- If you’re really stuck, call your local studio or pop in and ask for help.
How do memberships work?
As mentioned above, the best way to reach your goals is to make a commitment to yourself — decide how many times a week you can come and buy a membership to match — three times a week, five times a week, or any time. The more you commit, the more you save.
Can I transfer or share my class package or membership?
Absolutely! Any of our standard Barry's packs (5 through to 50) can be shared amongst clients. Memberships and promotional packs are non-transferrable/shareable.
Can I use my classes at any location?
Yes! Barry’s Australia classes are redeemable at any Barry’s Australia Studio.
Can I freeze my membership?
If you commit to a membership longer than a month, you can suspend it due to doctor’s order, death, moving, or loss of job. You can also freeze it for six months (for injury). If you wish, you can freeze a membership for the duration of your pregnancy. We support you and when you are ready to come back to class postpartum, you can take it at your own pace. You know your body best and we are so impressed with our Mamas-to-be and new mamas in class.
Do I book a floor spot and a tread spot?
You only need to book your starting spot, either floor or tread, and you will automatically go the corresponding spot on the tread or floor when the instructor tells everyone to switch. If you go for a Double Floor class, the treadmill is ignored! You’ll be on the floor for the whole class.
Should I start on a treadmill or on a bench?
Take your pick! The beauty of Barry’s is that you get the exact same workout whether you start on the treadmill or bench, so many clients love to switch it up.
Can I book online?
Yes. In fact, we encourage it! Just register for an account first online and then buy yourself some classes or a membership package. After that, you can go ahead and reserve your spot online. Make sure though that your city and studio is correct when buying your classes and reserving your spots. We want to make sure you don’t end up booking your class in the wrong location!
Want a more mobile friendly experience? Download our Barry’s Asia Pacific app and follow the same steps to buy classes and reserve your spot.
What is your cancellation policy?
We know how much you love to plan, which is why we open reservations 7 days prior to the class. So, scoop those spots up, and plan your week. All we ask is that if you are not going to be able to make the class, you cancel at least 12 hours prior. This allows us to make sure someone else gets that primo treadmill if you can’t make it! Anything cancelled less than 12 hours before class starts is a late cancel, and you do forfeit the class.
What if I miss a class?
If you book a class under your membership and don’t show up, we charge you a no-show fee. If you have a class package, unfortunately, you lose your class. We know you’d never miss class on purpose and we’ll be super bummed not to see you there.
How far in advance can I reserve my class?
Seven days. Stay tuned and be ready to book online or in studio as soon as classes become available. Classes often sell out fast, so be ready and quick especially if you want that favourite Treadmill number of Floor spot!
What if I'm there less than 5 minutes before class start or late to class?
We want to be totally transparent with you: a lot goes into the final minutes before class, which is why we require you to be present and checked in five minutes before the class start time. It’s a lot like flying — we need that time to finalize the class list and everyone’s starting spots, as well as to accommodate the wait list and any needed moves. If we started this process at the beginning of class, the class would start late and you wouldn’t get your full workout. Plus, we know you need those few extra minutes to double knot your laces, pre-order that shake, and chat about what we may be throwing your way in class!
If you are late to class and we have not given away your spot to the waitlist, it won’t cost you anything but a couple hundred calories. Just check in and come on in, and try not to disturb the Barry’s clients who have already begun their workout.
Do you allow walk-ins?
Sure, but watch out! Some classes book out in a heartbeat, so you should really check ahead of time to check out if there’s space.
What is the wait list?
Lots of our classes book out. If the class you want is booked out, you can get on our wait list. As people cancel, you will be automatically added in the order you had signed up.
If you secure a spot more than 12 hours before the scheduled start time of the class, we will notify you by email. If a spot doesn’t open by then, you still have a chance of getting in. Just show up at least 5 minutes before class starts and once we have our no-show count we’ll start going through the wait list in order.
Can I move my reservation?
If you are outside the 12-hour no-cancellation window, you can always move to another class (that’s not already booked out). If you need to move your appointment — but there are less than 12 hours until your scheduled class — that’s considered a cancellation and the above cancellation policy would apply. Sorry, no exceptions.
Can I leave my kids, pets or other items in the lobby?
We love that you want to share Barry’s with your whole squad, but unfortunately we can’t be liable for anything left in our lobby area.
What sort of amenities are in studio?
Within our Studios you’ll find showers, lockers, a fabulous Fuel Bar for a smoothie and some goodies to pamper yourself with like grooming products, and premium beauty products. Check out the details on the studio pages.
Can I come in for a shake even if I'm not taking a class?
Absolutely. They are that good!
Should I eat before class?
Most nutritionists recommend eating something 30-60 minutes before class to give you enough energy to make it through the workout and the protein to build and tone muscles. Just make sure you don’t get too full. Try something that’s in the 200-300 calorie range and includes some sugars, carbs, and protein. Bananas and almonds are two great examples of foods that work well before a class.
Will you watch my baby for me while I'm working out?
That’s a tricky one! Do you know how much we’d love to say yes? But we just can’t take this responsibility in Studio. We can help build Barry’s Bodies and Babes, but we can’t look after Babies sorry.
What should I eat after class?
Protein, protein, and more protein! And in case the fourth time’s a charm… protein! Which is why we have our Fuel Bar set up in the lobby with a menu of delicious shakes full of healthy ingredients that will totally check this box.
Why? When you work your muscles hard, you are breaking down muscle and you need amino acids to repair them. This is what tones your body. More muscle means a faster metabolism, which means more calorie burn throughout the day, even when you’re not moving.
Can I work out at Barry's if I have an injury?
Ultimately that’s your choice. First, speak with your doctor about what you should and shouldn’t do. If the doctor clears you, mention your injury to the Barry’s instructor when you arrive and they can help you modify the workout. If you can’t run, you might want to try Double Floor — where you skip the treadmill altogether.
Please be careful and listen to your body! You’re precious material.
How do I order a shake from the Fuel Bar?
We allow our clients to order a shake before their workout, and (just like magic!) it will be waiting for you when you stumble out of class. You can do this yourself as you book online, or in Studio at the front desk and Fuel Bar when you arrive in Studio. We’ll charge it to the card we have on file for you, and it will bear your name. The various colours also make for amazing Instagram posts. #BarrysFuelBar #FuelBarFridays
What if I’m pregnant or just had a baby?
We strongly recommend you talk with your doctor about what is appropriate for you. Everyone is different. Plus, the details of each pregnancy can differ. While continuing a reasonable program of physical activity and exercise during/after pregnancy often can be beneficial, some modification to exercise routines and exertion levels may be appropriate. Again, we recommend you discuss what is best for you with your doctor, and make sure your doctor knows what a Barry’s workout entails (running and weight training).
If you wish, you can freeze a membership for the duration of your pregnancy. We support you and when you are ready to come back to class postpartum, you can take it at your own pace. You know your body best and we are so impressed with our Mamas-to-be and new mamas in class.
Can I text or talk on the phone while in class?
No! It’s dangerous and distracting to others. We know how vital it can be to keep that phone with you, but please, for that time your you’re with us in the red room, pop it in the locker or put it to one side.
How old do I have to be to come to Barry's?
16 is the magic number to attend Barry’s, but you have to be accompanied by an adult until you are 18.
Is my data secure and private?
Yes, we don’t sell your info and all our systems are encrypted and secure.
Our payment systems are industry standard encryption and your account information is held in a secure environment which is as hacker proof as it can possibly be. Check our Privacy Policy for more information: https://www.barrysbootcamp.com.au/privacy-policy/
Are you thinking about opening a new Barry's near me?
Unless you’re on Mars, then, probably! We have a team who are busy answering that very question at every waking moment — where should we open up next?
Our highest priorities are places full of sporty people that we think will have fun in class. We’re always looking at adding more studios.
Let us know if you think lots of people would love Barry’s where you are, and if you want to get involved in helping us make it happen there. You can email us at: [email protected].
HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training)
Barry’s has been bringing its clients HIIT workouts before HIIT was even a thing. It’s a thing now. A big thing. HIIT combines intense, high-energy bursts of activity with short periods of lower-energy activity, followed by a cool down. There isn’t a whole heck of a lot of low energy during a Barry’s workout, but there’s just enough to keep your heart racing and provide the benefits of HIIT.
Double Floor
Many of our clients prefer to do “Double Floor” during a class, which means you won’t step on a treadmill. Rather, this means you’ll double up on the strength portion of the workout. It’s a good option for those who are less focused on cardio and trying to build more muscle or anyone who has limitations on the treadmill.
Hellweek
Sometimes we will conduct a Hellweek challenge, where participants commit to coming to class every day for one week. Clients have the chance to take seven straight days of classes, one per day, at a special price. Hellweek is the fast track to a heavenly physique. You can check with your local studio to ask if they have any Hellweeks planned in the near future.
Woodway Treadmills
These are not your gym teacher’s treadmills. All Barry’s locations are equipped with Woodway treadmills, the absolute best in the world. These super-quiet machines are the most comfortable surface you’ll ever run on and come the closest possible to simulating running outdoors. The runs at Barry’s are varied, so you’ll never be bored. You’ll alternate between sprints, inclines, Dynamic Mode (more on that later), and you’ll assume other positions on the treadmill you’ve never thought possible.
What are the safety protocols implemented during COVID -19? The safety of our Barry's family is our first priority. We have implemented the following to ensure our Barry's family feels secure and safe at all times:
Social distancing in place in every Red Room & all common areas
Hygiene stations in all Red Rooms & common areas
No shared equipment - you will have your own treadmill, bench and weights for the entire class
All Barry's Team members are wearing medical grade masks
The Red Room & all common areas are cleaned thoroughly by our full-time cleaning staff between each and every class.
Can we ‘rent’ Barry’s equipment?
Not at this time. We have our IGTV workouts saved on Instagram that require no workout equipment.
